Canisius University student, Nicholas M. Tytka, a junior biology major, won top honors at the 33rd annual Aquatic Toxicity Workshop held in Jasper, Alberta, Canada. Tytka was the first undergraduate to win first place in the poster presentation category.

William Fitzpatrick Chair of Political Science Lecture Series presented Michael Scheuer, CBS News terrorism analyst and former senior CIA officer, who gave a lecture on “America, Osama bin Laden and the War that has Barely Begun.”

Canisius University welcomed author George Saunders as part of the 2007 Contemporary Writers Series. Saunders, the author of three collections of short fiction was a winner of the 2006 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.

Canisius University presented its annual Conversations in Christ & Culture Lecture Series with the first lecture entitled, " Can We Know the Historical Jesus?" given by Luke Timothy Johnson. Johnson, a former Benedictine monk, is the Robert W. Woodruff professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Emory University's Candler School of Theology.

Tim L. Uhl, an expert on rehabilitation of shoulder injuries spoke at Canisius University through the Peter Canisius Distinguished Teaching Professorship Program. Uhl is an associate professor and director of the musculoskeltal Research lab at the University of Kentucky.

The Peter Canisius Distinguished Teaching Professorship Program at Canisius University awarded a new round of professorships which began June, 2007. The three year grants allow college faculty to create innovative programs through initiatives such as interdisciplinary projects, scholarly travel, and experiential courses. This year's awards went to Bruce J. Dierenfield, PhD, Robert E. Nida, PhD and Susan Putnam, PhD.

Canisius University's Contemporary Writers Series welcomed Acclaimed Irish poet, Eamon Grennan, for its fourth annual Hassett Reading. Grennan's poetry has received several awards including the Pushcart Prizes and awards from both the National Endowment for the Arts and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation.

Jacek Muzyk, a native of Poland and principal French horn player with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra performed at Canisius. His performance was sponsored by the Permanent Chair of Polish Culture.

Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., president of Canisius University, announced the appointment of Scott A. Chadwick, PhD, to the post of Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Judy Shepard, mother of hate-crime victim, Matthew Shepard, spoke at Canisius University. Judy and Dennis Shepard established the Matthew Shepard Foundation in the aftermath of their son's murder in 1998. The foundation promotes gay and lesbian equality and works to prevent anti-gay hate crimes.

Lackawanna native and novelist, Connie Porter, was a guest of Canisius University's Contemporary Writers Series. Porter is the author of two novels and the "Addy" books in the American Girl series.

M&T Bank awarded Canisius University a $500,000 challenge grant to be used toward the creation of an interdisciplinary science center at the college.

Canisius University received a $1 million gift from local philanthropists Peter and Elizabeth Tower. The gift will be used to establish the Peter Tower Endowed Professorship and the Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Canisius University hosted the annual New York State Archives Conference held June 13-15. This year's conference focuses on community history and resources that preserve historic documentation and make them accessible.

Reverend Michael F. Tunney, S.J. was appointed rector of the Canisius University Jesuit community at Loyola Hall by The Very Rev. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., superior general of the Society of Jesus. Fr. Tunney succeeds Rev. Patrick J. Lynch, S.J., chair and associate professor of religious studies and theology.

Local philanthropist Peter A. Vogt donated $1 million to Canisius University to establish the Peter A. Vogt Scholarship Program. Vogt Scholarships will be awarded to students who would qualify for the college's highest merit-based scholarships.
August 16
Canisius University received a $1 million gift from the Jesuit Community. This gift is to serve as the basis of a challenge grant to the college's alumni to increase giving to the college's annual fund campaign.

Businessman, entrepreneur and mayor of Crestwood, IL, Chester Stranczek donated a $1 million gift to be used toward the creation of an interdisciplinary science center at the college. Chester Stranczek was the recipient of an Honorary degree at the 2001 Canisius University commencement.

The Canisius University Contemporary Writers Series hosted acclaimed fiction writer Brock Clarke. Clarke read from his works The Ordinary White Boy and What We Won't Do.

George Weigel, a senior fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C. presented his lecture entitled "The Achievement of John Paul the Great." This lecture was a part of the Conversations and Christ Lecture Series co-sponsored by the Global Study of Religion and the Permanent Chair of Polish Culture.

The Richard J. Wehle School of Business named Williamsville resident Patricia A. Hutton, PhD, professor of economics and finance, the first recipient of its new Peter Tower Professorship. The Tower Professorship was established in 2007 by philanthropists Peter and Elizabeth Tower. The professorship is awarded to faculty of the Wehle School of Business, providing them with the resources to create innovative programs for undergraduate and graduate students, which foster entrepreneurship, innovation and economic development in Western New York.

The college hosted a public forum to commemorate Constitution Day. Established in 2004, this is an American federal holiday. The event was co-sponsored by Canisius University Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta, the Canisius University Chapter of Phi Sigma Alpha, the Buffalo/Niagara League of Women Voters, the American Association of University Professors, the American Association of University Women, the Erie County Bar Association and the Network of Religious Communities.

Chris Lowney, best-selling author and special assistant to the president of the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) presented his lecture, "What 21st Century Leaders Can Learn From 16th Century Jesuits." This event was sponsored by the Office of Campus Programming and Leadership Development.

Canisius University President Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., announced the college's plan to raise $90 million by the year of 2010 for capital improvements and to enhance the college's endowment. A Legacy of Leadership: The Campaign for Canisius University is the largest fund-raising initiative in the college's 137-year history.

The college dedicated Dugan Residence Hall (formerly Eastwood Hall) in honor of Rev. Paul J. Dugan, S.J., moderator of athletics. and as moderator of the Canisius University Alumni Association. Fr. Dugan is a legendary and beloved figure at the college, as evidenced by the hundreds of alumni, faculty, staff students and friends in attendance at the picnic in the Quad after the dedication.

The Canisius University Program in the African American Experience announced its speaker series for fall 2007. The speakers were Peter R. Kolchin, PhD, the Henry Reed Professor of History at the University of Delaware. His lecture was entitled, "Interpreting & Reinterpreting Slavery."

Patrick J. Kuhse, former international fugitive and convicted felon, who currently works with universities and business in the development and education of students and staff on how to recognize ethical dilemmas and how to implement effective critical thinking skills. He discussed his personal experiences as a successful stockbroker to his involvement in a financial fraud scheme as well as his reflections and observations about the causes and prevention of white collar crime.

Canisius University installed Chapter Chi Tau #546 of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society. Eleven student members were inducted into the new chapter.

The Frank G. Raichle Lecture Series on Law in American Society welcomed John C. Yoo, JD, to present his lecture entitled "Presidential Power: Greatness or Weakness." A professor of Law at the University of California at Berkeley School of Law, Yoo is best known as a key architect of the Bush administration's legal response to the terrorist threat. Yoo served as a member of the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel at that time.
November 1
The Zoo Biology Program announced the opening of its mini-zoo, "Tropical Trek: From Dusk 'til Dawn in the Amazon." The animal habitats were designed by students in the Canisius Zoo Biology program under the guidance of Dr. Michael Noonan and Kevin J. Murphy, Buffalo Zoo curator and alumnus of the Canisius class of 1986.

The Dr. George E. Schreiner '43 Pre-Medical Center at Canisius University welcomed Mark J. Lema, MD, PhD, of Roswell Park Cancer Institute to the Montante Center. He presented his lecture entitled "2007 and Beyond - Preparing for the Future Health Care Paradigm."

Wilma King, PhD, the Arvah E. Strickland Distinguished Professor in African American history and culture at the University of Missouri-Columbia presented a workshop for undergraduate education students and history and social studies educators entitled "Slave Children in the American South." Dr. King's visit was sponsored by the Canisius University Program in the African American Experience.

Canisius University presented a concert by El Trio Gitano featuring Mir Ali, guitar; David Phillips, percussion; and Besty Reeds, flute. This event was sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages, Latin American Students and Friends, MexiCanisius, the Office of Multicultural Programs and the Women's Studies Program.

The Canisius University Urban Learning Leadership Community was recognized for excellence in diversity in education by the University of San Francisco Jesuit Network for Equitable Excellence in Higher Education. The only program of its kind in the area, ULLC develops academic leadership potential through team learning to create a new generation of leaders in the city of Buffalo.

Scott A. Chadwick, PhD, vice president for academic affairs, announced that Canisius University will offer a 3-2 Dual Degree Program in Liberal Arts and Engineering. The program will be directed by H. David Sheets, PhD, professor of physics.

The annual German Christmas Mass was celebrated at Canisius in Christ the King Chapel. Rev. Daniel P. Jamros, S.J., associate professor of Religious studies and theology at Canisius was principal celebrant which was spoken entirely in German. The German American Musicians performed prior to the Mass.

Alumnus John W. Rowe, MD '66, the former chairman and chief executive officer of Aetna Inc., donated a $2 million gift to Canisius University.
